Kiswe Powers: Localized Direct-To-Fan Streaming Services

A look into Kiswe's partnership with the Utah Jazz on their branded streaming service, Jazz+

About Partner

Founded as the 18th member of the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1974, and located in Salt Lake City since 1979, the Utah Jazz is one of the most well-respected and forward-thinking organizations in the league.

Partner Goals

After choosing to cut their own cord and part ways with their regional sports network (RSN) following the conclusion of the 2022-23 NBA season, the Utah Jazz needed to find a new distribution model to ensure their local fans had access to every available game. The team partnered with KJZZ for over-the-air broadcast to achieve 100% distribution in Utah, but needed to build something from the ground up for direct-to-consumer distribution. The team had the following requirements for this new streaming service:

  • The platform needed to look and feel like a team-owned product and fit within their existing digital ecosystem
  • Since the team only controlled distribution rights within their local market, the new platform needed to be geo-fenced to the relevant zip codes but also provide flexibility and continuous access for fans who might be temporarily traveling outside of the market
  • To provide unencumbered flexibility and convenience, the platform needed to be accessed on desktop, mobile, and smart TVs
  • The platform needed to support a variety of pricing models and distribute both live and on-demand content

Kiswe Solution

In September 2023, the Utah Jazz launched Jazz+, a fully branded direct-to-consumer streaming service powered by Kiswe, in partnership with SEG Media and the NBA. Built to meet the team’s goals, the final product features:

  • Custom-designed platform that feels authentic to the existing Jazz web presence and hosted on a custom domain (UtahJazzPlus.com)
  • Gated content access available only to a specific list of zip codes with “couch rights” integration that allows local subscribers to watch games outside of the relevant territory for up to 30 days
  • Branded web, mobile web, mobile, and smart TV applications
  • Support for annual and monthly subscriptions in addition to pay-per-view pricing models
  • The ability to distribute 70+ live NBA games with on-demand replays plus exclusive, behind-the-scenes team content
  • An integration with the NBA to support NBA ID registration and login
